Post Hana!

Hana Spring 2011 came at the perfect time, as always.  We left early, 4am to be exact, on Thursday morning to head to the wet side of the island.  What's the best way to begin a vacation?  McDonalds breakfast!  That's how!  We arrived early that morning and began setting up camp at Wai'anapanapa State Park, our home away from home for the next few days.
After settling in it was time for our first session as we heard from our Dean Adam Hulstrom as he spoke about knowing the will of God.  The students then set out for two hours of alone time with the Lord.  The next sessions on Thursday night and Friday morning were from Calvary Chapel South Maui's Pastor Charles Casco.  His study theme was Psalm 139 and he asked the question, "How big is your God?"  Friday night and Saturday morning the students heard from Jacob Macias on Luke 18 and Romans 12:1-2.
Quiet time is a huge part of Hana and is always so refreshing and time well spent.  God's presence is so evident when you escape from everyday life for a bit.
Besides being blessed by the encouragement of the speakers and getting away to spend time with God, students also had a chance to get out and explore more of Maui.  There was time for hikes, beaches and exploring the lava tubes!  What a blessing to be here in Maui!

Pre Hana Jitters

As midterms have come to a close...we are gearing up for Hana this weekend!  You can feel the excitement in the air as everyone is ready for a little getaway from classes and homework.  We're planning to leave at 4:00 am to drive up to Hana for a weekend of camping, meditating in the Word and exploring Maui!  There are only a few more assignments due before our retreat starts and students are busy studying away!  Hana is always a great time to put away distractions and to be refreshed in the Lord, especially because it marks the half-way point of the semester.  Some of the best memories are made in Hana and we know that God has great things planned for this trip!

Remember that night we slept in a parking lot...

The events of Thursday night and Friday morning:

  • 9:30 pm we were informed that a 9.0 earthquake had hit Japan.  This meant that tsunami waves were expected to hit Maui around 3:00 am Friday morning.  We were all in a state of shock when we heard the news.
  • 10:30 pm the school met as a group and discussed "the plan" for evacuation.
  • 11:00 pm students were shuttled to our evacuation spot on higher ground...the parking lot of South Maui Choppers.  This parking lot is where we spent the 9 hours in anticipation of the tsunami.  The mood was relatively calm with the exception of a few tears as students contacted family, listened to music or watched the developing news.
  • 3:00 am as people calmed down the warning siren would go off every hour or so reminding everyone of the reason we were in a parking lot.
  • 4:00 am the first waves hit flooding up to 1/3 of a mile inland...coming up to the front lawn of Calvary Chapel South Maui.  Thankfully no damage was done to the church or to our condos, however some parts of Maui were hit harder than others such as Front Street in Lahaina and Kalama Park in Kihei.
  • 7:00 am we found out that we were not allowed to go back home just yet.  A big thank you to Ray and Cindy at South Maui Choppers for opening up their business to our school.  Also, thanks for providing a "We Survived the Tsunami 2011 Breakfast!"
  • 8:00 am students were given the ok to go back home to their condos.  Classes were cancelled for Friday and we were instructed not to go the beach for the day.  Now we can all say we've survived a tsunami and slept in a parking lot!

Please Pray for Japan!!

Pray!

Let's remember to pray for Lora, Coleen and Valerie as they travel to Nepal.  They will be there for two weeks caring for a family in need by giving medical care and helping them move.  God was so faithful in providing for this trip on such short notice so He has great things in store for these beautiful women!!
PRAY FOR:

  • Pray for safety
  • Physical and spiritual strength
  • Raj's health
  • Their families here

Snorkel-dippity-do-da-day

Last weekend we grabbed our snorkel gear and headed over to the West Side.  The morning started off at Black Rock Beach in Kaanapali.  There was jumping off Black Rock, swimming with turtles, basking in the sun, and eating sandwiches--literally!  The next stop was sunset at Honolua Bay with more snorkeling (keeping true to the snorkel-dippity-do-da-day name!) and exploring.  The night ended in Lahaina with dinner and shopping.  Thanks to our interns for planning a great day!

He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea,

and everything in them—He remains faithful forever.

For the Greater Good of China!

China: 2011
Calvary Chapel South Maui is sending a group out to China this coming June!  The team's aim is to support the awesome work God has started through Pete and Jennifer Peissner.  Six CCBC Maui students are are excited to take part in this mission trip to further God's Word.  To raise money the church held a Valentine's Day Dinner that was a time of food, fun, and fellowship.  They had a great turnout and everyone is excited to see how God continues to provide!

Please pray for the 2011 Mission Team, as they prepare spiritually and physically to serve God wholeheartedly.  Pray that God would prepare the hearts of the people, that they would be open to hear and receive salvation through Jesus Christ.

China and Chinese Food:
Reminder!  Head to Panda Express this Thursday, March 3rd from 11:00AM to 8:00PM for 20% of your purchase to be donated to the mission fund!  Stop by Calvary Chapel South Maui to grab a flyer (Offer not valid without flyer).

Leader’s Retreat

On the weekend of February 4th-5th our interns and dorm-stewards (aka CCBC Fearless Leaders) ventured up Mount Haleakala for a leader's retreat.  This camping trip was a time of prayer as the leaders interceded for the students, school, and community.  It was also a time of eating, bonding with each other and trying to stay warm in not-so-maui-like-temperatures.

“I thought it was very much needed for the leaders.  A lot of questions were answered and it was useful for the leaders to become like-minded.  I feel like it was important for the leaders.  It was cold.”
Caleb Knox

“It was super delish!”
Eli Hoffman

So basically, they ate, they prayed and were merry!

Spring 2011!!!

We kicked the Spring 2011 semester off on January 28th with orientation and a "get to know you" volleyball game.  Students arrived at 10:00 am bright eyed, bushy tailed and ready to see what God had in store for them this semester.  They were greeted by our great Dean, Adam Hulstrom, who delegated out M199's (practical and ministry services).  This was followed by a pizza lunch where students got to chat and chow down!  After pizza, it was a time of learning the rules, being introduced to teachers, prayer and worship.  Overall, it got the students excited for this upcoming semester!

Later on that night, the students and interns travelled down to Kalama Park for a night game of volleyball and s'mores.  This was a great way to start the semester and get to know everyone!  Here are some pictures...enjoy!

Glory to Greater Glory!

This is the journey of 28 students on a pursuit to know what God's plans are for their lives.  Over the next 4 months we will be stretched, tumbled, molded, and refined into people who seek after His Kingdom in everything we do.  We are on a mission to learn how to be salt and light in this dark world that had no hope without Him.  To the world this just looks like a vacation, but in reality God has each of us here for a specific purpose.  We've come from all over the United States, from New York to right here on Maui.  All with one common goal: to grow closer to God.

"One of key characteristics of our God is that He brings us from 'glory to greater glory'...He wants to open new doors, reveal new truths, inspire you with new visions, and fill you to overflowing with His Spirit."~Pastor Charles Casco

Hana retreat Spring 2010

If there is one thing that can be said for our Hana retreats each semester it is that they offer a special kind of refreshment in God's perfect timing. With the wide open beauty and vastness of Hana you can't escape the presence and the glory of our God. Now join the beauty of Hana with the special revelation and truth that God offers through hours spent alone at His feet and time together in the word and ViOLA, you've got an awesome retreat in the beautiful countryside of Maui. We would like to say mahalo nui loa to our guest speaker this semester, Andrew Rothrock, who joined us from Portland Oregon.
Here are a few pics, enjoy......
